Istanbul, Izmir, Ankara, Cappadocia, and back to Istanbul

October 14-25, 2009

 

Day 11. October 24 - Istanbul
Today we will explore Dolmabahce Palace, first Ottoman palace in Istanbul which was built with a mixture of Baroque, Rococo, Neo-Classical and Imperial styles with a Clock Tower.   From the 2006 Cityscape Architectural Review Award, we will choose to visit Istanbul Modern, (“Community Building Award”), the Kanyon Complex r ("Commercial Award"), the Isbank Tower finalist of the “Commercial Future Award”). Then, embark on a Cruise of the Bosphorus, having a grand overlook at some impressive Ottoman Mansions. Overnight in Istanbul.

Day 02. October 15 -Arrival to Istanbul

Upon arrival meet with tour guide at the airport and transfer to the hotel. Gather this evening for a Welcome Dinner. Overnight in Istanbul.

Day 03. October 16 - Istanbul

Today’s included excursions are the Topkapi Palace, unquestionably one of the most famous palaces in the world, noted for its treasures, priceless gems, and artefacts; the Blue Mosque whose interior walls are covered with twenty thousand blue Iznik tiles; the Archaeology Museum, winning the Council of Europe’s Museum Award in 1993, the Cinili Kosk “Tiled Pavilion” with the extensive use of blue tile mosaics on its facade; the Sirkeci Train Station, the terminus for the famous Orient Express and the Spice Bazaar, where the scent of hundreds of spices permeates the air.

Day 04. October 17 - Istanbul

Spend the morning at the Hippodrome whose main architectural features are the Starting Boxes, the Sphendone (the curved tribune in the south end), and the Spina (the separating wall in the middle of the racing track, embellished with obelisks). Then on to Basilica of St. Sophia, which has inspired architects and religious leaders for over fifteen hundred years. In the afternoon explore Chora Church with a unique iconographic  quality and the beauty of its mosaics and wall paintings, making it one of the most outstanding masterpieces of Byzantine art in the world; visit the Suleymaniye Mosque which was built for Suleyman the Magnificent by the greatest of Ottoman architects, Sinan.  Overnight in Istanbul.

Day 05. October 18 - Istanbul – Izmir    

Transfer to Ataturk Airport to take an Izmir flight (TK0314 08:30 am). Then drive east to Sardis, conquered by Alexander in 334 BC . Ithe area was prosperous during the Hellenistic and Roman periods. We will go  north to ancient city of Pergamum, once ruled by Alexander the Great. Famous for the invention of parchment paper, Pergamum had a library containing two hundred thousand books. Overnight in Izmir.

 

Day 07. October 20 - Izmir – Fly to Ankara

Transfer to Adnan Menderes Airport to take an Ankara flight (TK0375 07:45 am).  Then visit the world renowned Museum of Anatolian Civilization which contains priceless artifacts from Paleolithic to Roman times, the Mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk – the father of modern Turkey and the Ata Tower. Overnight in Ankara.

Day 08. October 21 - Ankara - Cappadocia

Drive east to Alaca Hoyuk, an area with holdings representing four layers of pre historic times: Chololithic, Old Bronze, Hittite and Phrygian ages; Then we will go to Yazilikaya, an open air shrine of the Hittite Empire and Hattusas, the capital of the Hittite empire in the 2nd Millennium BCE. Overnight in Cappadocia.

Day 10. October 23 - Cappadocia – Fly to Istanbul

Spend the morning with visiting Avanos, typical Turkish village where you will be amazed by the ceramic art technicques dating from the 12th B.C. to the 3rd centuries B.C.  Our sightseeing continues in Zelve that became one of the most important settlements and religious centers for the Christian community between the ninth and thirteenth centuries; the hidden monastic valley of Pasabagi, which has a large number of carved rock houses and churches and Asikli Hoyuk, the earliest settlement in Anatolia. Transfer to Kayseri Airport to have an Istanbul flight (TK 0265 20:30 pm). Overnight in Istanbul.

Day 09. October 22 - Cappadocia

Our sightseeing begins with a visit to the fascinating Goreme Valley. The lunar like landscape of this region is eerie, yet beautiful. Over thousand of years, the rain has eroded this landscape to give rise to strange rock formations known as “Fairy Chimneys”. Many of these have homes and churches carved into them. Some of the grottos are magnificently decorated with colorful frescoes depicting biblical scenes. Then visit a local carpet coop, where you will get the chance to explore the district from a cultural perspective. Our sightseeing continues with the Underground City of Kaymakli, where around the sixth century, the Christian inhabitants of the region began to tunnel into the soft volcanic rock of large hills. As deep as two hundred and seventy five feet with eight different levels, several thousand people lived in this subterranean city. Enjoy a Whirling Dervishes Ceremony at Saruhan Caravanserai,  built around 1238. Overnight in Cappadocia.

Day 12. October 25 - Departure Istanbul

After a farewell breakfast transfer to Ataturk Airport to fly  home.

Day 06. October 19 - Izmir

Today starts with a journey to Ephesus, the largest ancient city ever uncovered. Once populated by three hundred thousand people, it has an enormous amphitheater, which can still hold twenty four thousand spectators. As we walk down the marble covered streets, we see gymnasiums, baths houses, public latrines, the library of Celsius and also the Terrace Houses (The Houses of the Rich) whose walls were garnished with frescoes and the floors were decorated with mosaics. Our next stop will be at the Ephesus Museum, with a beautiful collection of classical sculptures, including two big Artemis statues, the head of Eros, and also the famous fresco of Socrates. Finally we will have a look at the  6th Century Basilica of St John.
